My family stayed at Urnes Gard a couple of years ago and it was quite memorable. If you are looking for comfort and ready-made entertainment instead of great beauty and history, then this may not be the place for you. Our two night stay was in late June when the weather was fine. We chose to stay in the Eldhuset since it was private and affordable. In the hut you can also cook your own food if you wish. Be sure to bring food with you since there is no food for purchase at Urnes. Do not miss the breakfast served in the main guest building. The jam is the best you will ever taste and you have to have some of the raspberry juice! Both straight from the farm. Did I mention the herring? The stave church is amazing and the church tour was well done. If you walk the path up from behind the church there is a splendid view of the fjord. The farm has a row boat which we took out on the water. We also drove down the road a little ways and hiked a trail up to the formidable Feigefossen (waterwall). The charming, soft-spoken sisters who run the guesthouse were very helpful.

This family run accommodation option in Urnes is an excellent choice for visitors to the spectacular Urnes Stave Church. The farmsted is part-orchard and part-farm and the owners run a cafe and several self-contained cottages. We stayed in the Eldhuset, just down the hill from the church, and surrounded by orchards (in bloom when we visited) with views over the fjord. The cottage featured a massive 19th century fireplace (now with a TV in it though!) and a traditional wooden box bed. The kitched was really well-equipped for self-caters and the cottage also had a spacious ensuite bathroom. Breakfast was served in the cafe and featured farm-made jams and juices, as well as the usual Norwegian breakfast fare. The two sisters who run the farm and accomodation were very welcoming and friendly.

The beautiful fjords of Norway welcomed us to Urnes hard and the oldest Stave church in the world. We weren’t able to stay overnight, as they were booked solid, but the cafe was very nice, the family that runs it were extremely hospitable, and experiencing the Stave church was something Ill remember forever. ||Thank you!

We are 2 families and they booked us for apartment and eldhuset (a cottage). The apartment has a small living room, an open kitchen, bathroom and 2 bedrooms. Rooms are rather small. Just nice for 5 pax.||We stayed at the eldhuset. It is an old house they kept and still well maintained. But i don't like the location of the cottage because is just next to the deer slaughter house. You will hear noises from tractor engines in the morning which can spoil your mood.||The area is surrounded by orchid and a deer farm. We were charged even though we were their in house guests for the visit to the deer farm ie 130nok for 2 adults and 2 kids. And 250nok for fruits farm ie raspberries and blue berries farm. They also didn't have any clear rules for the raspberries and blue berries farm. Eg some farm will tell you that you can pick certain amount of fruits to bring back cos is paid. So please ask before you decide. ||Breakfast is very simple but with their home made jam is delicious. If you are prepare to self cater, make sure you are really well prepared because there is no grocery shop nearby.||No space for kids to run around and play freely. Opposite is private residential area including their garden. We found a better place at solvorn. So we left a day earlier and we made an excellent choice to do that. The solvorn guesthouse is just perfect for couples or even for family with kids. The guesthouse is tastefully decorated. Their garden is surrounded by raspberries and apple trees. They have toys for kids to enjoy and even a tree house. ||I would strongly recommend to stay put at solvorn guesthouse instead of urnes gard. You can always take a ferry from solvorn to urnes to visit the urnes stave church which is just next to the urnes gard. The ferry is only 20 mins.

It’s not that the service is bad. When we went there it was just non existent. The coffee machine makes the worst possible coffee and you of course have to help yourself. A few cakes were on display on empty fridge shelves. The waffles seemed made of carton. Such a shame when you benefit of such an incredible location.

It is a pity that cafes so well located have such lousy service and minimal offer. The waffles were "synthetic" and the jam miserable in quantity. Zero attention, they didn't even know what they had when we asked. 😕

Na een lange wandeling vanaf de parkeerplaats onderaan de berg was het erg fijn om dit lunchcafeetje tegen te komen. Lekkere koffie (Douwe Egberts) en prima huisgemaakt gebak! Het was er wel vrij duur.

I am giving this property four stars because of value-for-money, hospitality, and location; the only place within walking distance of Urnes Stave Church, the oldest in Norway. Originally a 'private chapel' rather than a community congregation, it is a tiny, enigmatic gem.

Urnes gard is very basic. Also a working farm. You will not be feted, cosseted, nor entertained. You can get all of that just across the fjord in Solvorn. You will also not get local signs saying "Parkering forbudt" etc. Caravans are welcome. The products on sale in the shop are worth mention.
Yes; would recommend to the serious traveller, yes to a friend. If Neo-nordic cuisine, panoramic tours, and air conditioning, no. Har det bra.
